Authorised translations for companies and private clients
The authorised translators of the Diction network prepare authorised translations for both companies and private clients. A Finnish or foreign authority may require an authorised translation when the document in question is an official document, such as a power of attorney, contract, marriage certificate or degree certificate.
Authorised translator
An authorised translator is a translator who has passed the authorised translator's examination, which is awarded by the Finnish National Agency for Education. Previously, authorised translators were known as official translators. A translation of an official document prepared by an authorised translator is legally valid in the target language. In Finland, authorised translators can only prepare translations where one of the languages in the language pair is Finnish or Swedish.

For example, the following documents require an authorised translation: birth certificate, marriage certificate, degree certificate and annual report.

The delivery time for translations is typically 1-2 weeks
- The delivery time for an authorised translation of one or two pages is typically 1-2 weeks (including the delivery of the paper version of the translation)
- We will deliver the electronic version of the translation as soon as the translation is completed (usually within a few business days)
- If you need the authorised translation before the estimated delivery time, please contact us to expedite the process
- An additional fee is charged for urgent translations

Delivery
When the authorised translation is ready, we will deliver it to you by email and by post. The paper version of the authorised translation is certified with the stamp and signature of the authorised translator.
Apostille
In certain cases, a foreign authority may require that the authenticity of the authorised translation be confirmed by an apostille certificate. A public notary of the local registry office can issue an apostille certificate, which certifies the status, signature and stamp of the authorised translator. The apostille certificate is a sufficient legalisation procedure for documents in countries that have ratified the Hague Convention.
The authorised translators of the Diction network can prepare the authorised translation, but please note that you must contact the public notary yourself regarding the apostille certificate.
Document legalisation
If the country is not a party to the Hague Convention, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs must legalise the authorised translation if required by the foreign authority. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs thus confirms that the signature and stamp of the authorised translation are genuine. In some cases, the legality of the translated document must also be confirmed at the embassy of the country concerned in Finland and sometimes even at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the destination country.
We recommend checking the possible legalisation requirements of the country concerned with the embassy or the authority requesting the document.
